Motivation. Let’s face it, it’s the biggest hurdle to overcome on the 400 meter track of hurdles when it comes to exercise compliance – no magic bullet and you can’t game the system. Believe me, over the course of my 35 years of fitness training I’ve tried many things to get me in the mood. After years of trial and error, some of which included a banana dipped in Hershey’s, here are my top 5 exercise motivational tips that have kept me consistently in the exercise loop. Give them a shot and let me know how they work out.
.Gear-Up: like a good Boy Scout, stay organized and be prepared: shorts, t-shirt, sneaks w/socks at the ready. Put everything in its’ staging area – gym bag in the car, bike tires pumped-up, water bottles pre-filled and ready to go. By keeping things closer to the target or start point, there will be less, as I call, meandering distractions, derailments or bailout points. In my mind the most overlooked of the top 5 exercise motivation tips.
.Get Fired-Up: do the first thing 100 million Americans do every morning… have a cup-a-joe and benefit from its’ CNS stimulation and metabolic energy expenditure boost. Add a shot of espresso if you’re really dragging. If you’re not a coffee drinker try an energy drink.
.Clean-Up: wash your face, brush your teeth or take a shower…or all three. And by hydo-stimulating/massaging the body with a quick shower you’ll bridge into your workout much easier. You can leave your head wet too if it’s brutal outside to keep you cooler at the outset. This is the one top 5 exercise motivational tips that most people are surprised how well it works!
.Nosh-Up: my favorites: 1/2 of a banana, a few almonds or a teaspoon of peanut butter to curb your hunger. Hunger will dissipate once you get moving, get hormonal and regulate blood sugar levels, you’ll auto-correct. Just don’t go havin’ a party, as blood will be diverted or shunted from working muscles to the tummy for digestion. Violators will experience the classic food coma.
.Buddy-Up: having someone to push you that has the same goals in mind is a bonafide results-producer. Workout motivation typically ebbs and flows and having a ying to your occasional yang and vice-versa is a win-win for everybody. Up-beat, positive and enthusiastic Tony Robbins types are perfect.
