“If you see a need, fill a need”. This statement holds so much truth to it and I believe it deserves some well needed attention. It’s not just a catchy quote from some cute movie. Nothing that has ever been said in truth has not already been said by the One Who created all of creation. Of course we will never find these exact words persay, in the Bible, but we will find some scripture that advises us to do this very thing and why. Lately it seems that so many young people are just out in the world, doing their own thing and not giving any heed to the consequences they will one day create. I can’t blame this younger generation for doing what feels good to them if they have never been taught the true word of God. This is a subject that is coming into reality over the generations. As God’s Word is gradually decreasing in our lives, we as a whole started gravitating towards the law of the land and not those of a Supreme God. As a result, we have created a new generation of inconsiderate, selfish, lazy, ill tempered people with bad attitudes. In each generation where the instructions of life are not taught and learned, it grows increasingly worse as these children have children. Marriage is not even a prerequisite anymore. Now, I’m not saying every young person in America fits this bill. Praise God, there are those who have studied the Word of God and are living a life that pleases Him. The problem though, they seem to be a minority.
One example of this kind of new attitude of “What about me” comes to mind. I know one young man who unfortuneatley was never raised in a godly home. He more or less was left to his own devices. He never finished high school and jumps from job to job and woman to woman. His idea of being a real man is drinking and being a hot shot. This has gotten him into trouble on more than one occasion. Not only that, this kind of nonchelant attitude has produced two innocent victims out of wedlock to two different women and now possibly a third to yet another woman. These kids can’t seem to see the bigger picture. Instead of settling down with one woman and owning up to the responsibility of being a dad, they soon get bored and move on, paying child support in their wake. This is not what God had intended. It’s also reaking havoc on tax payers. Since God created man in His own image, and God is the epitomé of love, correction, gentleness, patience, provision etc. it only goes to show that someone else has taken over this role. Only a vile and corrupt creature would teach selfishness, greed, lust of sex, wealth, power, pride, and unhappiness. His name is Satan. He is eagerly teaching people how to be their own gods and lead all of God’s creation down into the pit of destruction one day. Unless our young people can hear God’s Word, this need for the truth will not be filled. As the saying goes, “you can’t give away what you don’t have”. As servants of the most high King, we are expected to see needs and fill them. His Word gives us the things we need in order to give them away. This was God’s plan. In fact, the more we give, the more we will receive! What kind of needs can someone like yourself fill? You may be saying you don’t have money, you have no special talents, you just don’t have anything to offer. Stop right there! Everyone has something to give and it doesn’t have to be material.
The one thing we are commanded to give is… LOVE! This kind of love is better known as brotherly love. It’s putting someone else’s needs ahead of your own. This may seem impossible for some to even conceive, but the consequences will produce rewards for a life time. This is God’s plan for success. Let’s look a little closer at some examples.
“Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another, for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.” Romans 13:8
Paul is telling us that we are expected to love all people, Christian and non-Christian alike. We do this by being honest in paying back our debts. Don’t leave someone else holding your bill. Be responsible and accountable.
“Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brother love; give preference to one another in honor;” Romans 12:9-10
This scripture talks about the complete welfare of another and to meet, or fill their need. It’s only good when done in a sincere manner. Devotion is purely from the heart. This is the part God sees. Now you might be thinking how this would benefit you. Jesus is always the One Who guides us into all truth. His Truth will set us free from the bondage of selfishness, greed, self importance, pride or whatever it may be that holds you back. In other words, sin!
In the book of Matthew Jesus is talking to his desciples about the judgement of the Gentiles. The Word of God spells out what true salvation is and how to get it. It’s receiving Christ into your heart and making Him the Lord and Savior of your life. This confession from your lips will erase all sin away. On the day that Christ returns to reign on the earth He will separate the believers from the non believers.
“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne; All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right and the goats on the left.” Matthew 25:31-33
Immediately a believer, a sheep is considered favored, and the unbeliever is consigned to a place of dishonor at His left. These He will reject. Well, that’s not very nice you might be thinking but let’s listen to Christ’s reasoning.
“Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty; and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You or thirsty and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? When did we see You sick or in prison, and come to You?” Matthew 25:34-39
These righteous deeds are the fruits of salvation, not good works. These good deeds alone will not get someone into heaven. These were deeds manifested by the grace of God in their lives. This “brotherly love” is the main objective for judgment. To see a need and fill that need is evidence of saving faith. Jesus told them that whatever they did for the least of these, they also did to Him.
To the unsaved, He will present all the same questions but ask why the gave Him nothing. They will respond in the same way the believers with one small difference, “When didn’t we do all those things?” And to them He will also reply;
“Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these; you did not do it to Me.” Matthew 25:45
Here is why we should be gracious in filling the needs of others for the glory of God.
“These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matthew 24:46
