The style of the Mexican shirt is a GUAYABERA, but is also referred to as a Mexican Shirt, because the American tourists when visiting Mexico will see the shirt worn at all times, so they started calling it the Mexican shirt. Being that it was a very comfortable shirt for the hot weather climates and outdoor events, it became very popular for destination and beach weddings and there is where the term MEXICAN WEDDING SHIRT came about.
The design of the Guayabera shirt is a very comfortable one. It has a boxy style body, (no need to tuck in the shirt), so it feels roomy, very airy and easy to move around. It has four pockets in the front, two at the top and two at the bottom. A set of Alforzas, called pin-tucks, which are tiny little pleats that run up and down in both side in front of the shirt, giving it a sort of dressy look. Originally the Mexican Wedding shirt was made of Linen, which is ideal for hot weather climates since linen can absorb the heat exceptionally well.
Later on other fabrics were being used like: Cotton, Poly-Cotton, Polyester and mix blends as well. White was the first color the Mexican wedding shirt was available in.
Because of its popularity many other colors were created. Brides were starting to color coordinate their wedding party colors with the Mexican wedding shirts. An array of beautiful blues, turquoises’, yellows’ and many other soft colors are now available for the Bride to choose from.
Being that the Beach Destination Weddings is mainly held outdoors and the climate more likely than not is HOT, the Mexican Wedding shirt (Guayabera) is the shirt of choice for such an event. From the Groom, Groomsmen, father-of-the- bride, ring bearer and male guest can now enjoy a semi-formal comfortable shirt that can be worn to many other occasions thereafter.
Many different designs within the Mexican Wedding Shirt style have been develop.
