Do you have man boobs or man breasts Are you embarrassed to take your shirt off in public, especially at the beach? Do you dread friends having pool parties? Are you considering having your man boobs surgically removed by liposuction or mastectomy/breast reduction surgery?
Now before you run off to see a cosmetic surgeon, I want you to think about the reasons why you should not have this surgery. But before I go into these reasons, I will outline the different types of man boobs.
There are two types of man boobs: gynecomastia or pseudo-gynecomastia. A visit to your doctor should ascertain which type you have. Gynecomastia is commonly believed to be caused by a hormonal imbalance, whereas pseudo-gynecomastia is essentially caused by a man being overweight.
Unless you are an extreme case, and have gynecomastia and not pseudo-gynecomastia, here are three reasons why you should not consider this surgery.
Risk
As with all surgery, man breast removal via gynecomastia surgery is risky. Here are some of the common risk factors: bruising, swelling, scarring; infection; blood clots, internal bleeding; damage to blood vessels, nerves, muscles or lungs; temporary or permanent changes in nipple and breast sensation; and many more. You may even end up having to have the surgery repeated to correct or reposition the chest, as it’s not unknown for cosmetic surgery to botched. In uncommon cases, death can even result.
Money
Like other cosmetic procedures, gynecomastia surgery is expensive. It does differ doctor to doctor, but in mild or less severe cases, you can look to pay around $3,500 on average. But, if you are an extreme case you could be looking to fork out anything up to $10,000.
Underlying Cause
The third reason to not consider gynecomastia surgery is that surgery alone doesn’t confront the reason why you got man boobs to begin with. You may even end up back at square one: i.e. with man breasts again. And, you don’t want that.
If your man boobs are caused by a hormonal imbalance, then it’s better to address that problem with your doctor, while concentrating on adopting a diet and exercise regime to remove them naturally. Hey you might even developed them after taking a course of medication. So, once again, a visit to your doctor should help.
If medication isn’t the cause, and your hormonal levels of estrogen are high, there isn’t much doctors will be able to do. So, keeping your body fat levels down will help to minimise the problem.
And, if your man boobs are the result of being overweight or obese, then once again, adopting a healthier lifestyle will help you to rid yourself of your man boobs.
